That looks like a NASCAR Galaxie? Maybe 1963-64?

You got the time frame right, but it’s an offshoot of the Chevy W-motor (348/409). The car is a Z-11 63 Im pala lightweight.

Below is Chevy's *other* 427 from 1963- this one was for NASCAR:

You want the bottom one, right?

Unless it twists the unibody structure, which would be a concern...

Yes, I know it's not EXACTLY 427 cubes, but it's the closest thing we have nowadays.

Yaaaasssss!!!

I know the LS3 is better than the 7 but nothing matches the 7 for its sound...

The bottom one is a Chevy engine in a Corvette.

I’ve no qualms with cross-brand engine swaps. Although a For d 427 would be based on FE engine architecture, which would make it easier to install in a Thunderbird, since they already use FE engines.

Aha. I missed the valve cover IDing it as a W-motor.

Years ago I rebuilt a marine 427 top-oiler out of a boat. A reverse-rotation engine converted to standard. Never got to put it in a Cobra though; that was the plan.

I find those two interesting, because there were only a handful of each one ever produced, yet Chevy was building two completely different 427s in 1963- three years before the Chevy  427 was introduced to the public.  And neither one really shares parts with the production 427.

This is not the same block as the 396? That’s bizarre. Interesting that ‘63 was the first year for Ford’s 427 FE, replacing the 406 as their NASCAR motor but as a production motor.

The engine in the white car is a W head-essentially a stroked 409, but the heads and intake are different from a 409. It was developed for drag racing.

The one on the stand is the predecessor of the 396/427 big block Chevy. At a glance, it’s pretty similar and has the porcupine valves like a 396, but it wasn’t designed for high volume production. By the time it went into production two years later, enough had changed that hardly any parts overlap. Pretty sure the heads won’t even bolt up.

Both are tweeners- they have some traits they share with the W, and some they share with the big block.

I think I read Chevy made a tall-deck version of the 427 for medium duty trucks. Is this that motor?

Nope - it’s the so-called “Mystery Motor”:

The funny thing is, that I think it actually sounds better in the Z/28 than the C6 Z06. Not that it sounds bad in the Vette, but it sounds downright mean in the Camaro.
